music from The Songs of Pete Seeger

OK, so this is the end. Another Advent Calendar finished, thanks for all that have listened. We hope that you have enjoyed. Thanks for all that have contributed here on the web page and thanks to all for their vocal support. It means alot to us. Thanks, again.

Today is a selection of songs from one of America's greatest writers. The first two tunes are covers of Pete Seeger performed by other artists and finally, Pete himself singing one of his latest songs. Enjoy. Today's selections are:

Kisses Sweeter than Wine performed by Jackson Browne and Bonnie Raitt

My Rainbow Race performed by Donovan

And Still I am Searching performed by Pete Seeger

Wonder what we will use next year?

Wisdom of the 90's
by George Burns
read by Harvey Korman

Here is some of the wisdom of George Burns and some fun as he banters with Harvey Korman. We should all be so full of life at this advanced age.

Family Trip to Yellowstone
from Mother, Father, Uncle, Aunt
by Garrison Keillor

Here is another of Garrison Keillor's stories about his youth and growing up with his family. All his stories seem to have something that everyone can relate to.

Israel Kamakawiwo`ole also known as Iz

We first heard Iz playing in a final scene for one the characters in the television show ER and it took some time to find his recordings. He plays great ukulele and his vocal style is unique. So yes Peggy, there is some ukulele music this year. Todays selection are:

Kalcohano

Ahi Weli / Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star

Over the Rainbow

Chapter One of The Jungle Book

Mark Twain recently said that "Kipling knew all there was to know" and this is one Kipling's most famous pieces. The story we all know and love.

Todd Snider
from New Connection

KPIG had be to mentioned somewhere in a song and luckily Todd Snider provided it. I like the way he can write songs and tell a full story in a few minutes. We had thought about using B double E double R UN as the tag off. Think how much you would hate that by now! Today's selections are:

Broke

Statisticians' Blues

Vinyl Records

Beer Run

The Two Sides of Victor Borge

This is from A Selection from Live Performances of Most Requested Comedy Routines

The first time I saw Victor Borge perform, I was immediately struck by his sly smile. Comedic and a great musician, he was amazing. During the performance, he looked at his watch and said there was not enough time to play this entire piece. He tore the music in half, explaining that not all of it was necessary. He looked again at his watch and tore the music some more. When he was done tearing it to pieces it was the size of a postage stamp and then, with great difficulty, he placed it on the music stand and proceeded to play beautifully for six or eight minutes. He was certainly one of a kind! All we can say about today's selection is:

Victor Borge

Garrison Keillor

Carl's Christmas Pageant
from Mother, Father, Uncle, Aunt

Garrison Keillor must be today's greatest story teller. If you have ever been involved with a Christmas Pageant you understand what he is talking about. He has the ability to describe situations to which we can all relate. Luckily, we have never been involved in the argument of using live animals or not using live animals.

Songs from Down from the Mountain
featuring John Hartford

Segue from Mark Twain wanting to be a river boat pilot, to John Hartford who was a river boat captain. Mostly he will be remembered for his banjo playing and singing. Down from the Mountain came from the artists that performed the sound track for the movie O Brother, Where Art Thou. Originally we thought that we might use Big Rock Candy Mountain as the tag off this year, then we thought about using Shove That Hog's Foot Further in the Bed but decided to not use this piece until later. That really is Holly Hunter introducing John Hartford at the beginning.
Todays selections are:

Indian War Whoop (with Gillian Welch)

John Law Burn Down the Liquor Sto' (with Chris Thomas King and Colin Linden)

Shove That Hog's Foot Further in the Bed

Big Rock Candy Mountain

The Best of Mark Twain Tonight
with Hal Holbrook

Samuel Clemens, or Mark Twain, had the remarkable ability to portrait the American life, as it was then and it really has not changed. Arguably one of the greatest American writers is performed here by a gifted actor who seems to capture the man. Today's selections are:

Introduction

On Smoking

Congress

Sunrise on the Mississippi

On the Road with Charles Kuralt

By just traveling around the United States, Charles Kuralt was doing just what he wanted to do and because of that some beautiful stories were told. This piece reminds me that anyone can affect those around them. Everyone provides to everyone around them all the time! Todays selections are:

The Foreword

from Belmont, NC

from Buffalo, SC

Donna the Buffalo

Live From the American Ballroom

I discovered Donna the Buffalo while trying to research The Other Ones show that was going to be shown on the internet. Donna the Buffalo was listed as one the opening acts and had a link to their site. With a name like that, I had to buy a copy of something and live recordings are my favorites. So from The Grateful Dead to The Other Ones here is Donna the Buffalo. Todays selections are:

Family Picture

Seems to Want to Hurt This Time

Amy's Answer Machine

by Amy Borkowsky

So here we go again with Amy's Mom; we have gotten a lot of positive feedback on the earlier piece of Amy's Answer Machine. We hoped we might and decided to do more of what Amy Borkowsky shared. You can go here and see Amy's website. Remember this was a gift for supporting public radio and we should all do that!

Love You Forever by Robert Munsch

I guess we have picked on mothers enough on these selections, so we thought this might be a good addition. Everyone who has listened should know how important mothers are. I think I can say for everyone Thanks Moms!

Today's selections are:

Love You Forever

Snow, Snow, Snow

Beausoleil
from

Looking Back Tomorrow

Not all requests go unnoticed, a few years ago someone said "You should add some Cajun music." Well it took us a while but until this recording we could not find the right pieces. Beausoleil has as it front man Michael Dourcet and we are sure he would agree with cajun fiddle legend Dennis McGee who said "I'm not old, I've just been around a long time." If Michael Dourcet and Beausoleil are not true cajun music, then they would never have said "We wanted to play the music as we heard it sitting around the kitchen table." We are happy for kitchen tables!

Todays selections are:

J'ai Ete Au Bal
Bons Temps Rouler
It's You I Love

The Life of Riley

We could not leave it without the conclusion!

December 8

The Life of Riley

I enjoy old radio shows and I remember The Life of Riley from television. William Bendix reminded me of my grandfather, yet they do not look alike. I think it was the lunch pail that Riley had, one of those metallic silver and gray boxes with the curved top with room for the thermos. Funny how one thing will remind you of another and they are not truly related.

Bela Fleck
from Perpetual Motion

I believe it was Steve Martin that said; one cannot play the banjo and not smile; we should force all our want to be elected politicians to play the banjo as they tell their plans. He may have been correct. This CD won a Grammy. Today's selections with Bela Fleck on banjo, are:

Johann Sebastian Bach: "Prelude" from Partita No. 3 for Solo Violin (BWV 006)
Johann Sebastian Bach: Three-Part Invention (Sinfonia) No. 10 (BWV 796) Mandolin: Chris Thile Bass: Edgar Meyer
Johann Sebastian Bach: Two-Part Invention No. 13 (BWV 784) Marimba: Evelyn Glennie

I am not the biggest banjo fan; however, I do appreciate this musician's body of work. I never would thought of listening to Bach on banjo, but Bela Fleck can play it!

The Best of NPR: Writers on Writing

What should be the first line for today? Maybe, it was the best of times, it was the worst of times, no it goes on too long. How about I was born in a house that my father built, no too Presidential. Maybe, it was a dark and stormy night, no too Snoopy. How about some really bad first lines? Stanley looked quite bored and somewhat detached, but then penguins often do, or he was the kind of private eye who didn't know the meaning of the word 'fear'; a man who could laugh in the face of danger and spit in the eye of death -- in short, a moron with suicidal tendencies. I will never get a good first line!

The best part of this for me was Norman Maclean talking about A River Runs Through It which is another beautiful story written by someone who must have struggled over each and every word. It also gives me hope that no matter when you decide to start a project, it is never too late.

All Things Bright and Beautiful
Chapter 27
by James Herriot

This is a sequel to All Creatures Great and Small, following the daily life of a small town veterinarian. This piece reminds me of many of my daily occurrences. I often ask, please try to tell me more information to try to help you. In many ways it reminds me of something from Monty Python.

Click here to see James Herriot at work!

AfroCelt Sound System Volume 3: Further In Time

I first heard of AfroCelt from Radio Paradise and decided to buy it. At the time I did not know it was from Real World which is a record label created by Peter Gabriel and I have purchased many other things on this label and always have enjoyed what I have received. Todays choices are:

Persistence of Memory
When You're Falling

This album was produced by Simon Emmerson, James McNally and Martin Russell and release on NewWorld records.

Amy's Answer Machine by Amy Borkowsky

We received Amy's Answer Machine as a premium from supporting public radio. It is good to support public radio and public television and you can get such wonderful things. This was so funny when we first heard it that we knew we would have to share it with everyone. We almost tried to use it as the tagoff, but felt it would not work with some of the days items and some of Amy's items would be too long.

The Poisonwood Bible by Barbara Kingsolver

The beginning of this book displays the excellent writing style of this entire novel and stands on it own as an interesting piece. The book follows the life of a missionary family that goes to the then Belgium Congo during the late 1950's. It is written from various points and reflects the differences in cultural values and views.

The Flatlanders from Now Again

The Flatlanders are Jimmie Dale Gilmore, Butch Hancock, and Joe Ely. In 1990 they released More A Legend Than A Band, which was really some songs that they had recorded in 1972 in Nashville and was on 8 track tape, but not readily available to the public. Each of them have released many albums on the own over the past thirty years, but they do sound good together. Hopefully we will not have to wait thirty years if they decide to release something else. We chose

My Wildest Dreams Grow Wilder Every Day
Now It's Now Again

and decided to use the lyric For now (and now and now and now and now and now and now and now and now and then) Now it's now again as the tag off or reminder to stop the tape each day.

The album was produced by Joe Ely and released on New West records.
